Position Statement

The Cabarrus Soil & Water Conservation Disctrict (SWCD) serves to manage, preserve, and protect the natural resources of Cabarrus County. The SWCD also assists in urban and rural development. In light of the scientific data available, it is becoming urgently necessary for us as a world community to begin to implement solutions to issues surrounding the depletion of air, soil, and water quality; destruction of natural habitats; pollution, including that non-point pollution which comes to a district from other places; and incursions of urban development.

One of the major functions of the SWCD is to educate the public as to the value of an intact ecosystem. As an educator I am adept at creating informative lessons and support materials. As a current member of the Sierra Club I have the proven interest in ecological issues needed to inspire new ideas concerning the dispersement of these educational resources. I am invested in preserving the vitality, beauty, and health of our region by making sure that as many people as possible recognize the importance of having respect for our environment. One of my top priorities as a SWCD Supervisor would be to encourage developing and implementing a curriculum for schools that brings students out of their traditional classrooms and into the parks, open spaces, and ecosystems in our county, so that they experience the classroom that is all around us. I believe the county should encourage developers to embrace reclaiming, redeveloping, and renovating abandoned urban areas.
